“AI is something for senior management and the IT department. It has nothing to do with our team.”
We hear this regularly. And that is exactly the problem. Because when only “the top” is focused on digital transformation, nothing happens on the work floor. AI makes hierarchy less important - and taking initiative more important.
In the organisations we work with, we see the same pattern time and again: strategy is developed at the top, tools are rolled out, and then everything goes quiet. Employees wait for permission. Team leaders wait for clear frameworks. Meanwhile, the world keeps moving forward.
Digital transformation only works when people at every level feel that it applies to them too.
In her research on psychological safety, Amy Edmondson (Harvard, 2018) shows that innovation does not come from the top down. The teams that perform best during digital change have one thing in common: leadership at every level.
Team members who take initiative without waiting for permission. Managers who set direction rather than control. A culture where experimentation is the norm.
Tomorrow’s leader is not a controller, but a facilitator. Give your team one concrete experiment to try this week:
“Choose one task you will complete this week. Try using an AI tool to do it. Share what you have learned on Friday - even if it did not lead to anything.”
No major strategy. No business case. Simply try, learn and share. That is leadership at every level.
At Group Moovs, we design learning programmes in which everyone learns to lead - from team leaders to employees. Through simulations, coaching and practical assignments.
